Voice Over Internet Protocol Has Its Disadvantages

People who use Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone services, such as Vonage, need to be aware of its disadvantages when using this type of service exclusively for their phone service. This internet-based type of phone service makes it difficult for emergency calls to be routed to the nearest call center.

In order to make sure emergency calls are routed correctly when using a voice over internet protocol service, users need to update their physical location upon boot-up. Without the location update, an emergency call might be routed to the call center nearest the last location dialed.

Another disadvantage of VOIP service is that it doesn't work during a power outage or if your Internet connection has failed or is overloaded. While the advantage of using a VOIP service is to be able to make phone calls and use the internet at the same time, users make themselves vulnerable when using this type of service as their only way to make phone calls. Especially during a time of emergency.

So make sure you have a backup plan for making calls during an emergency crisis. Get a cell phone or some other phone service that you'd only use during such times.
