Call Splashing - How to Avoid
“Call Splashing” can occur when you place a call
from any public phone such as a payphone, hotel, or airport phone. Without
knowing it, your call can be transferred to another call center before being
sent to your desired long distance provider. You may then receive a bill from
your long distance provider for the unwanted call transfer. So be sure to watch
your phone bill for charges higher than
you expected. This is known as "call splashing" and can be against the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) rules.
To help avoid
charges from call splashing, don’t agree to any call transfers unless you understand what the operator is asking.
Carefully review your phone bill each month for higher charges. If such charges occur, contact your long distance
provider for the correct billing rate. You can also file a complaint with the FCC.
Filing a Complaint with the FCC
You can file a
complaint by either e-mail (fccinfo@fcc.gov), the Internet or telephone
1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322) voice or 1-888-TELL-FCC (1-888-835-5322) TTY.
Your complaint should include the following:
-
name, address, and daytime telephone number;
-
the telephone number of the company you are complaining about;
-
detailed information about your complaint;
-
a detailed description of the steps taken by you to resolve the
complaint yourself. This should include all the names and phone numbers of the people you contacted to resolve the complaint. Be sure to include the dates you
contacted the people.
-
copies of the bills in dispute (be sure to circle the
disputed charges); and
-
the outcome you are wanting (i.e., wave fees).
