Sony Ericsson Designing New Handset Models

Sony Ericsson will introduce approximately 25 new cell phone models this year, including two new handsets. The two handset models, the Sony Ericsson K850i and K770i cellular phones, are available now via the Smart Gold postpaid plan.

Sony Ericsson account manager, Dino Romano, for Smart Communications, said the company is aiming to release the same number of new handsets as they did in 2007. “We introduced 25 last year. We’re looking at the same number this year covering all (handset) categories,” he said.

With Sony Ericsson ranking fourth among the top five cell phone vendors worldwide, they are confident they can develop handsets designed with features not found on the competition's cell phones. “We will be introducing new technology into the Walkman phones…such as the shake control and ‘sense me’ features,” Romano continued in his interview. He also said Sony Ericsson is developing a cell phone that would be TV-capable. The number one mobile phone vendor, Nokia, introduced a handset last year that enabled TV features.

Romano said Sony Ericsson is “growing aggressively” in the U.S., specifically with the middle- to high-end market segments. Their most popular handsets are the Cyber-shot and Walkman series. By introducing Sony Ericsson's handsets first through Smart Communications, Sony is looking to reach a wider market base.

Consumers will get the Sony K850i free with the purchase of the Smart Gold P3,500 plan or the Sony K770i with the purchase of the Smart Gold P1,800 retention plan.

Cherry Caluya, chief of Smart’s loyalty and retention marketing division, said “The Sony Ericsson phones are also known for reliability," adding that even though Sony Ericsson isn't the top dog in the cell phone industry...yet, “the market is still growing.”
