Recycling Your Cell Phone Can Help Save the Planet

The DailyIndia.com is reporting that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a program to motivate Americans to recycle their cell phones. The EPA is working with leading cell phone companies, service providers, and stores to get the program started.

The slogan, "Recycle Your Cell Phone. It's an Easy Call," is focused on increasing public importance of cell phone recycling and donation in an effort to increase the rate of cell phone recycling. The EPA states that by recycling cell phones, the world will become a better place. Recycling means a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, saving energy and conserving natural resources.

The EPA's campaign so far has consisted of printed public service announcements, which point out the ease of recycling and the importance of saving the environment from landfills full of cell phones. Podcasts are also another form of advertising for the EPA's "Recycle Your Cell Phone. It's an Easy Call" program. The podcasts answer frequently answered questions regarding cell phone recycling. Leading cell phone companies participating in the program include AT&T Wireless, T-Mobile, Motorola, LG Electronics, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Sprint, Best Buy, Office Depot and Staples.

"Thanks to our Plug-In partners' efforts, recycling an old cell phone has become a quick and easy way for Americans to help protect the environment," the Environment News Network quoted Susan Bodine, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, as saying. She added, "By dropping it off at a store or sending it through the mail, Americans have more recycling options today than ever before".
