How DSL Works: It's Advantages and Disadvantages

There are a variety of ways to connect to the Internet. These include using a modem, a local-area network connection in your office, a cable modem or a digital subscriber line (DSL) connection. DSL offers a high-speed connection while using the same wires as a phone line.

Here are some advantages of DSL:
  • You are always online and can still use the phone line for regular calls.
  • Your Internet speed is much faster than a regular modem (1.5 Mbps vs. 56 Kbps).
  • Most DSL installations don't require new wiring, so it uses your existing phone line.
When you sign up for DSL, the modem is usually supplied by the DSL provider as part of the installation.

Here are the DSL disadvantages:
  • Your DSL connection works faster if you live closer to the provider's central office.
  • Data being received is faster than data being sent over the Internet.
  • DSL availability is limited to certain cities, not everyone can get this service.
