Detariffing - What Consumers Should Know

As a long distance customer, your long distance provider has notified you of the changes to some of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. This change will affect the communication between you and your long distance company. The reason for these notices is defined as "detariffing."

Beginning in July 31, 2001, long distance companies must make their rates, terms and conditions regarding your long distance service available directly to you, the consumer. In reviewing this information, keep the following questions in mind:

  • How much is your current calling plan?
  • What is the length of the plan?
  • How do you, the consumer, accept or reject the terms of the plan?
  • How will the long distance company notify you of calling plan changes?
  • How are disputes resolved?

This information is provided by the Federal Communications Commission.
